Finding our Strength during Challenging Times

By Estee Taschereau

What we do in life gives us value and shows the world who we are. Many of us focus that outward expression into their work. What then do you do if your job disappears? Where is your value?

Work is an exchange of values. There is the value placed on the service you provide, and you receive compensation for your time or knowledge. Your energy goes outward in the form of ideas, decisions, and actions, and produce results. The primary return may be in the paycheck, but it can also include a feeling of accomplishment, the interactivity with others, a glowing review, or a success to add to your resume.

There is truth in the statement that our energy flows where our attention goes. Much of our energy does go into our work. For many of us we use our workplace for a portion of our self expression and social interaction since so much of our time is spent in the work environment. This is why leaving a job can be so devastating when it has become the nucleus of our lives.

A portion of our self definition is created by our surroundings and interactions with the world. The change that occurs when we find ourselves on the layoff list can feel like an earthquake, liquefying the concepts of our value that we thought were a firm foundation.

Losing a job will always impact our lives. The primary focus is on the loss of income, and this level is important and real. We must care for our day to day needs. Many of us feel other levels of loss as well, for our jobs often give us a sense of value and worth as well as routine and interaction with others.

Certainly the primary focus we have is to return to work and resume our incoming funding and benefits. Bringing our work schedule back on-line may take a little time. While you are transitioning you can use this time as an opportunity to address the thoughts and beliefs that define your self image.

Take a look at your forms of expression. Has your work been the core of your universe, or do you have sufficient outlets in other areas of your life for exchange with the world? Count your blessings, right now. What other areas do you connect to in your life? This list can include family, friends, animals, charity, exercise, hobbies, worship, and even something as simple as tending to your garden.

Opportunity knocks, and today the focus is restoring self through awareness. You have a doorway open to self insights that are not usually in question. Behind those question lies a vast wealth of personal empowerment that can serve you in your future. We will focus on releasing and restoring in part two of this series. - 18099
